Nectar approach:
In 2010, IT specialist Adam Robinson approached Nectar for advice on setting up a new business venture. Armed with a small budget and a mass of enthusiasm, Adam was keen to get his business up and running as soon as possible.
Neil worked with Adam initially to help scope and define his business model and proposition. In the same way that Nectar offers a ‘virtual marketing manager ‘ service to its clients so that they can concentrate on running their business, Adam’s model was about providing IT management expertise to local businesses that have an increasing reliance on IT in their day-to-day operations.
One of Adam’s biggest challenges however was coming up with the right name for his business. His initial comment during the briefing session was “I’d like something like Nectar”. For those of you who don’t already know, the name Nectar came about simply by taking Neil’s initials (i.e. NEC) and then using a dictionary to find words which started with those letters. The fact that nectar is also a natural substance we associate with sustaining life and growth also complements the underlying business philosophy.
Essentially, Adam wanted something memorable but also personal to him as the founder of the new venture. Many of the IT ‘clichés’ were explored and quickly dismissed as being too mainstream. Neil then started to play with the letters in Adam’s name and quickly realised that by taking the last three letters of his first name and surname, they created ‘Damson’.
At the presentation, Neil presented a couple of conservative name suggestions and then unveiled Damson. Adam’s initial reaction was one of surprise and curiosity, but the more he looked at it, the more it made sense.
Following the meeting, Neil progressed the project and delivered a start-up marketing toolkit comprising of brand identity including strap-line, web site splash page, business cards and vehicle signage. Neil was keen to ensure the work was delivered quickly and frugally without compromising on quality.
Feedback:
The best entrepreneurs surround themselves with experts in respective fields
to help them develop their businesses. This is why I approached Neil and Nectar to help me with the marketing of my business. Armed with the marketing fundamentals, Damson is continuously progressing and evolving. We now
have a growing client base which includes some of the best hotels in the
Lake District.
